Current Trends
There have been many research projects being conducted throughout the past couple years, here are some highlights of interesting research and some with large implications on a sector of the medical field!
1. Drug Discovery:
- As mentioned in my first blog, drug discovery is a main sector of healthcare, with a long research and trial and error process. It has been a highly intensive process to complete scientific research, data processing, decision-making, and more. But, now with AI these problems are being overcome faster, leading to increased implications for drug discovery. Although, ethics has been a major problem, but this company: https://deepmind.google/technologies/alphafold/ helps to create responsible AI use. If interested, please read more using the link above!
2. Building AI model to predict structure of protein:
- Protein structure prediction is a very long process, although the results of predicting such structures lead to a better understanding of a protein’s shape and function. Now, we can use machine learning models to predict the structure of protein. This helps to speed up drug development, database creations, and applications of biotechnology. By speeding up these process, new opportunities such as extensive exploration of genomics, bioinformatics, and medical research. 3. Language Models for medical applications:
- As many of us know, it takes longer than we would like for us to get medical questions answered, but with AI, that problem is expected to be solved. With large language models, we can expect to see medical expertise assistance with higher accessibility for populations. Med-PaLM uses image processing for uses in radiology, pathology, and more to enhance its use in clinical settings. Read more here: https://sites.research.google/med-palm/
These developments highlight the transformative potential of AI in healthcare, underscoring areas like drug discovery, biotechnology, and clinical assistance where the technology is especially impactful. For those interested in the medical AI start-up landscape, keeping up with these trends can provide valuable insight into opportunities and future directions.
